Working from the Hospital

*sigh*

Another benefit of working at home, is the ability to take your work anywhere. I only need my cell phone, laptop, and decent wireless Internet connection to work.

Unfortunately, I never thought I’d be working from a hospital room. Our 10yo daughter V, was admitted last Saturday with a fever and an extremely swollen lymph node in her neck. She wasn’t responding to antibiotics and her symptoms worsened. V had surgery Friday night to remove the lymph node.

We are awaiting biopsy and pathology results. Please pray for our sweet girl. She has gone through quite an ordeal this past two weeks.

Work at Home Outside

Ah…after a long winter (yes…it was that bad since I’m still talking about it months later) where the color grey dominated everything, the warmth of summer and gorgeous blue skies entice me to spend time outdoors.

On nice days, I like to pack up my laptop and work at home outside.

The change of scenery, healthy doses of fresh air and sunshine, do my soul good.

Here are two of my favorite spots to work outside:

These locations are ideal because they are within reach of a power source. Also, if rain threatens to fall, I can pickup my stuff and head indoors quickly. If the rain is light, I usually stay outside on the veranda, sheltered by the roof overhead.

The patio is also a great place to work and watch the kids play.

We Interrupt this Blogging Break…

I didn’t mean to be gone so long…it’s been a busy summer. I’ve completed three major work projects, one which expanded our business and network to Hong Kong. Our oldest daughter moved back home to attend college locally, so we’ve been doing some room re-arranging. Oh, and we just returned from an amazing 2 week vacation in Ireland!

We are looking at purchasing another apartment building (the rental market here is booming!) and I’ve been working on financing options that tie up the least amount of our own money.

I think I finally figured out what I want to do with myself…and it ain’t slaving over Cisco equipment the rest of my days! I started a “niche” info website a few months back and it is finally earning enough money to pay for my hosting fees and then some. I am excited to see my traffic grow every month and I am trying to add a few pages a week.

I love it. I really enjoy building my website and can see myself doing a few more. The best part is that I can work at home in my spare time. It may take me a few years to build up enough income from my sites to be able to quit my “work at home” day job, but I am not going to let that discourage me! I am trying to take it slow (my day job is stressful enough, thank you!) and learn as much as I can about information publishing.

My first site is a guide about Naperville, IL. I know there are other “travel guide” sites on Naperville, but they are just generic directories that lack a personal touch. I want to offer my visitors a taste of what Naperville is like through my personal experiences and photos.

If I Had A Million Dollars – Cool Home Office

Dad and I are in the process of finishing the basement. In said basement, will be the ultimate his/her work at home office! Oh…I can’t wait! We are at the hanging drywall stage, and when there is more progress I’ll post pics.

Avoid Work at Home Scams – Our Story

When Dad had his accident in early 2001, our world came crashing down. How could someone in their 20’s who was strong, vibrant, and hard working be struck down so suddenly and told he may never walk normally again?

Thankfully, Dad had excellent doctors who saved his foot and after 18 months of hard physical therapy, he learned how to walk again.

During those first few months, we struggled financially. I had two consulting contracts ending and Dad’s disability income was not enough to pay the bills. In desperation, we searched high and low for a quick way to make money, possibly a work at home opportunity. It wasn’t that we were interested in GRQ (get-rich quick), we simply wanted to PTBQ (pay the bills quick).

What we found, were TONS of scam artists eager to take our money and offer nothing in return.

That 80’s song “Taken In” from Mike and the Mechanics rings in my ears:

Caught up in the promises, left out in the end

Someone saw me coming, a fool without a friend
There’s one born every minute and you’re looking at him ♫

Unfortunately, we fell for an illegitimate direct sale company. We spent $600 for sign up fees and inventory and three months later, the company folded. Ouch! This was a hard lesson learned but one that made us wiser.

Seven years later, there is no shortage of unscrupulous people hocking work at home scams, especially with more and more people using the Internet.

Here are some tips on how to protect yourself from work at home scams:

Use common sense. Remember this wise advice: If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
Be wary of companies requiring money up front before providing details of how their business works.
If a company offers a money back guarantee, get it in writing.
Don’t allow yourself to be pushed into making a quick decision. Scam artists often use hard selling techniques to close the sale. If it’s a “limited time offer” that does not provide enough time to think it over, move on.
Check out the organization or company. Make sure to obtain the telephone number, address, and owners contact information. It’s also wise to check with the BBB and obtain references.
Work at home jobs and businesses require time and real effort. If you are promised “BIG MONEY” with little or no effort, chances are…it’s a SCAM!

I normally do a good job on balancing my work responsibilities and home life, but sometimes a heavy workload threatens to tip me off balance. Here are some great tips on how to manage work and home. Most people understand how difficult it can be to balance their work and home lives once they get married and have children. Somehow it seems that work life or home life is always encroaching on the other and causing problems at work, at home, and many times both. However the following five tips are great options to help with balancing work and home.

Make a Schedule

The best thing to do when trying to balance work and home is to make a schedule. Know how much time you have and schedule your work time and your home time. Then, you will know when you need to schedule work and home events. This will make your life significantly easier and you will know which activities fit into which time frame. Just make sure you stick to your schedule.

Share Responsibilities

Many times work and home responsibilities can become overwhelming because one spouse is handling more of the responsibilities than the other. So, learn to share responsibilities at home and each spouse can be responsible for their work. Also, older children should have some home responsibilities as well to help parents balance work and home.

Leave Work at Work

Balancing home and work can be difficult because it is so easy to take work home. If you really want to balance work and home then you will always leave work at work and keep home a sacred place for family and home activities.

Dedicate Weekends to Home Activities

A great way to keep home and work separate is to always focus on home activities during weekends, or at least on days off from work if you happen to work on weekends. When certain days are home days and other days are work days then it makes balancing work and home considerably easier.

Plan

The best way to balance work and home is to always make a plan. There are tons of tips that will help you, but there is nothing like making a plan and then following the plan to really balance work and home. It might be difficult, but if you have it planned out and follow the plan you will be surprised how easy you can find a balance.

Today Is My Friday

I am taking a vacation day tomorrow so today is my last official working day this week. It’s like my Friday…WOOT! The kids are excited because we are putting up the Christmas tree and decorations.

I’m excited because I’m spoiling myself with a three day weekend right after I had a four days off last week!

Before the word “slacker” forms on your tongue, let me share my work schedule with you. Next week is a working weekend. I am doing major router and firewall upgrades starting at midnight next Thursday, and working through Sunday. After that, my next day off is December 15th! I’ll need a vacation day after that to recover!

You Don’t Have To Work At Home To Become A Millionaire

Trent at The Simple Dollar posted a no-fuss, “path to weath” plan where anyone can become a millionaire by investing 5 minutes a day.

In researching home business ideas, I’ve come across many scams and “get rich quick” schemes targeting those who want wealth without the effort. There is NO program out there that delivers on this promise. NONE.

You need to work in order to earn. If it is legitimate work, it takes time.

Trent’s advice is to take 5 minutes a day and analyze your spending habits, look for ways to save, and then examine how you can grow your savings by investing.

Back in October, Dad and I decided to kick the Starbucks habit and saved $230. I am taking that $230 a month and applying it towards our home equity line of credit (in addition to the regular payment). This will enable us to pay off the balance faster and save money in interest. Once the HELOC is paid, I will take that monthly payment and sock it into our high interest savings account. We are looking at ALL areas of spending to see where we can cut back and save even more.

I plan on taking it one step further by increasing our income through a home business and funneling that money into our debt repayment.

Will the simple step of cutting back on daily spending make us millionaires? If we are consistent on saving and investing, I believe it will.

Wash, rinse, repeat…it’s really that easy.

I Put the Work in Work At Home

I was talking to a family member recently, and the subject of work was brought up. She said,
“It must be great to work at home. You can do whatever you want all day”. I gently reminded her that while I have more flexibility in my schedule, I do indeed work (usually 40+ hours a week). While it’s great, it’s still work.

Here are a few more funny comments/questions I’ve heard regarding working at home:

It must be nice working from bed.

Yes. When I was 41 weeks pregnant, I kept my feet up in bed every morning while I worked on my laptop. Now that I’m not pregnant anymore, I only get up from bed to use the bathroom.

Can you work barefoot?

No…company policy dictates proper foot attire must be worn at all times. During video conferences, my boss makes me point my webcam at my feet to make sure I’m following the rules.

Since you don’t have to work around people, do you take a shower everyday?

Once I realized how much time I saved by not commuting, I looked for other ways to maximize my time. I contemplated ditching my personal hygiene routine all-together, but then I remembered my husband has to sleep with me…and I’d like to keep it that way.
