Thank you Lord! V is finally home from the hospital and feeling much better. She is on heavy duty antibiotics and has been without a fever for 48 hours now.

Things are slowly getting back to normal here at the house…some incredibly kind and generous families from church brought us dinner the past few nights, so I am catching up on cleaning and paying bills.

Another benefit of working at home, is the ability to take your work anywhere. I only need my cell phone, laptop, and decent wireless Internet connection to work.

Unfortunately, I never thought I’d be working from a hospital room. Our 10yo daughter V, was admitted last Saturday with a fever and an extremely swollen lymph node in her neck. She wasn’t responding to antibiotics and her symptoms worsened. V had surgery Friday night to remove the lymph node.

We are awaiting biopsy and pathology results. Please pray for our sweet girl. She has gone through quite an ordeal this past two weeks.

I didn’t mean to be gone so long…it’s been a busy summer. I’ve completed three major work projects, one which expanded our business and network to Hong Kong. Our oldest daughter moved back home to attend college locally, so we’ve been doing some room re-arranging. Oh, and we just returned from an amazing 2 week vacation in Ireland!

We are looking at purchasing another apartment building (the rental market here is booming!) and I’ve been working on financing options that tie up the least amount of our own money.

I think I finally figured out what I want to do with myself…and it ain’t slaving over Cisco equipment the rest of my days! I started a “niche” info website a few months back and it is finally earning enough money to pay for my hosting fees and then some. I am excited to see my traffic grow every month and I am trying to add a few pages a week.

I love it. I really enjoy building my website and can see myself doing a few more. The best part is that I can work at home in my spare time. It may take me a few years to build up enough income from my sites to be able to quit my “work at home” day job, but I am not going to let that discourage me! I am trying to take it slow (my day job is stressful enough, thank you!) and learn as much as I can about information publishing.

My first site is a guide about Naperville, IL. I know there are other “travel guide” sites on Naperville, but they are just generic directories that lack a personal touch. I want to offer my visitors a taste of what Naperville is like through my personal experiences and photos.

I encourage you to check out my site at: http:\\www.naperville-guide.com

The holidays are over. My birthday is over. The kids are back to our school schedule, I am back to my <strike>normal</strike> work schedule.

Reflecting on 2007, I would say it was one of the best years of my life. I gave birth to Baby A (after two consecutive second trimester miscarriages). Our oldest graduated high school. We sold the rehab house that we thought would never sell. We spent an incredible week in Cancun!

There were many good things to celebrate, many hard times that we pushed through, but the bottom line is we are all healthy and we made it through another year…together.

I’m looking forward to this New Year and have great expectations for myself and my family.

Happy New Year!

I’m excited because I’m spoiling myself with a three day weekend right after I had a four days off last week!

Before the word “slacker” forms on your tongue, let me share my work schedule with you. Next week is a working weekend. I am doing major router and firewall upgrades starting at midnight next Thursday, and working through Sunday. After that, my next day off is December 15th! I’ll need a vacation day after that to recover!

***Just a reminder that my “Birthday Contest” ends TODAY! If you haven’t entered, please do so for your chance to win a $20 Gift Certificate from Amazon!

Ummm…ok. Please explain that to my bronchial lining that threatens me with wheezing if I dare take a breath.

Perhaps it’s because I’ve been working more than usual lately. I had the conference call frenzy last week. This week I’ve worked my regular hours plus I’m helping a friend out with her computer network at night. I guess burning the candle at both ends caught up with me. I’m coughing, and hacking, and my voice is almost gone.

My almost-17 year old baby came home from work tonight shivering and crying with a 102° temp. While I wrapped her up in a blanket I immediately remembered why some people say “Moms aren’t allowed to get sick”, it’s because we are moms.

Sure our bodies suffer from symptoms of illness, but as a mom there is always someone to take care of and we often put their needs before our own. We just don’t have time to whine.

Secretly I wouldn’t mind a sick day…but I’ll take a few shots of Nyquil, sip on some tea and honey, and take care of my big little girl.

Instead of waiting until the official holiday to reflect on what we have to be thankful for, why not take some time out to think about it right now.

In our family, our motto is: Count Your Blessings, Not Your Problems.

When we learn to recognize and appreciate what we have, it helps us gain perspective on our lives.

Jenn at Everyday Randomness is holding a contest this month – What Are you Thankful For? Check it out for your chance to win some yummy scents for you and your home.

I am thankful for many things this year, but here are a few at the top of my list:

The safe birth of Baby A

That our oldest daughter made it through her illness (resulting in a scary ICU stay) without permanent lung damage.

That all of us are healthy

***11/05/07*** Update: Only one day after I wrote this, my 5 year old cousin died in a car accident. Please keep my family in your prayers – especially her parents as they grieve the loss of their precious girl.

I tucked my children in last night and wept in gratitude that they are safe and we are here together another day. Life is so very precious and we must not take it for granted.

Are you ready?

Last year, I put a reminder in my Outlook Calendar to alert me when to start my countdown to December 25th. Instead of waiting until October to make my to-do lists, I thought we would benefit from a few extra weeks. My countdown has begun! I really can’t believe there are 99 days left!

This year, my focus is how to simplify our traditions and get the home organized. I also want to scale back on spending. Get the silly stuff out of the way, so we can focus on what is important to our family – spending time together and having fun.

A few ideas I’m tossing around:

Do an adult grab bag for Mom’s side of the family, limited to a small dollar amount for the gift. My brother has been out of work for 9 months and my other brother is on a sabbatical of sorts. No need for anyone to stress about money and we can have fun with this one.

Dad’s side of the family would never go for grab bag fun. Instead, we plan on scaling back the amount spent by giving well thought out, meaningful, family gifts.

When we first got married, our finances were very tight. Dad and I gave each other a “house gift”. Instead of buying individual gifts, we agreed upon a home improvement purchase. One year we bought the materials for a solid oak mantelpiece and built it together. This was more meaningful to me than any store-bought gift. We are doing a “house gift” this year.

Double the amount of shoeboxes we give this year to Operation Christmas Child. We enjoy this and have already started collecting goodies to fill the boxes.

I will post more in the 99 days to come about how we are saving and organizing.
