Tips for Juggling Working at Home and Kids

Posted by Mom at 12:57pm in Family, Work At Home

I’ve been working from home since April 2006, and have had to come up with many creative ways to juggle work tasks, home maintenance, and kids. Web Worker Daily (Author Leo also has 6 kids!) wrote: 10 (MORE) TIPS ON DOING PRODUCTIVE WEB WORK WITH KIDS IN THE HOUSE and I found myself nodding in agreement with several of the tips, especially:

2. Team up with your spouse. It really helps to have a great, supportive spouse. My wife is a teacher, so she needs to do work herself, so we take turns working at the computer while the other keeps the kids at bay. Take the kids outside, or take them to a park, or read to them, while your spouse does some work. Then switch.

I am fortunate that Dad also works from home so we take turns as our schedules allow. He is self employed, so he has more flexibility and takes care of the daytime needs. I usually take a lunch break with the kids, and he uses that time to make calls and send e-mails. We also are big believers in working early and late, when the kids are in bed.

It’s not always easy working from home with kids, but with creativity and flexibility, it IS possible.

Mom is Back to Blogging Basics

Posted by Mom at 8:31pm in Blogging

I’m back. Another post in August of 2007. Two posts in a month. Wow.

Seriously, I have contemplated whether to ditch the blog on momcominghome.com and after a few days of going back and forth I decided to try again. I enjoy writing. The few posts I’ve written in the past still receive traffic from search engines. Instead of just jumping back into this willy-nilly, I wrote down on paper what I needed done here in order to make blogging a habit.

At the top of my list was to upgrade Movable Type. The IT geek in me, relished this task and I just finished a few hours ago. I love it so far! Next, is a re-design of the site. I don’t know the first thing about design. What I have figured out for my basic layout is compliments to Elise at Learning Movable Type…thanks Elise! I need an updated look with some eye-popping graphics, but I won’t let that stop me from writing. I’ll plan the re-design for the Fall. I also need to make this a habit and how I do that is like everything else…schedule it. So I have a task to be back here tomorrow to write. Lastly, I need to find my purpose. What am I writing for, or about.

When I started this in 2004, I was a WOHM and I longed for the day that I could stay home with my babies. Read this entry: My Original Motivation for this Site, I think it explains it all nicely.

Now, I’m a WAHM (Work at Home Mom) and while I’m home and my babies see me more often, I still work for the man! I also dream of working for myself some day. Yes, I know being a network engineer is gloriously satisfying. But there are days (and nights) where the frustration is high and the hours logged on my laptop are long. Baby A must think every mommy has a laptop growing out of them.

So, I feel my purpose here is to write about the things I do best (WAHM, saving money, balancing WAH and raising six kids, etc.) as well as my journey to work at home for ME!

I guess the name still says it all…Mom Coming Home

Mom’s Comings and Goings

Posted by Mom at 12:43pm in Announcements

I’m approaching the 2 year mark on my Ulnar Transposition surgery and I thought about my neglected website and how I haven’t blogged in ages. Maybe I’ll post another arm pic next week to compare.

I have a love/hate relationship with computers. I love them because my IT career is based on them, but after a long day slaving over a hot Centrino Duo, sometimes the last thing I feel like doing is going online. I start off with good intentions (blogging, posting on my favorite forums, etc.) but then I tend to get busy with homelife, or work projects, and then neglect going online (for pleasure) for weeks on end. It’s not entirely a bad thing, because Dad and the kids benefit from my undivided attention, but I honestly enjoy the time I do get to spend online…and I miss it.

I’m not sure what to do with this blog long-term, since I can’t seem to post more than…oh let me see…once a year! I will leave it as-is for now and reevaluate later.

Here are the updates/major highlights for the year ;)

- In March, we welcomed our sweet baby girl A, who was our first waterbirth – born at home unassisted.

- In July, our oldest daughter suffered from a lung infection and was in the ICU for three days. After a biopsy, we learned that she has a fungal infection and she is slowly recovering with the right meds.

- We spent a glorious week in Cancun, Mexico (all 8 of us) and were spoiled and pampered!

- Work is work…but at least Mom is home! The second half of ’07 has proved to be extremely busy for me project-wise, and I’m learning how to balance my work life with a new baby.

No promises, but maybe I’ll post again before the year is out! :)
