Ulnar Transposition Surgery - One Year Later

Posted by Mom at 3:11pm in Ulnar Transposition Surgery / Cubital Tunnel
One year ago today, I had Ulnar Transposition Surgery on my left arm.

Prior to my surgery, I attempted to do research on my condition - Cubital Tunnel Syndrome so that I could be well informed on what to expect and to learn about the long-term prognosis after surgery. I was shocked to find there are many sites and message boards on Carpal Tunnel, but very few regarding Cubital Tunnel.

I receive several hits per month on “ulnar” or “cubital tunnel” so I figured I would provide an update to my fellow Internet friends who may be suffering from Cubital Tunnel and are considering surgery.

I must say, that making the decision to undergo the knife was difficult for me. I enjoy my mobility, but the pain and numbness were interfering with the quality of my life. I am not a vain person, but I do lift weights to keep my tricep area firm and prevent that unsightly fat jiggle when waving one or both arms.

Imagine my horror at my pre-op visit when my surgeon wielded a purple magic marker and proceeded to draw an eight inch line down the back of my arm! He said, “There…that ought to cover it. What do you think?” What did I think? I thought he was some bloodthirsty flesh mutilator!

As you will see from my before picture below, I had quite the FrankenArm for a few months. However, it is true…time does fade and heal all wounds.

Two days after my surgery, I found that my numbness and “funny bone” pain were gone. Now my surgeon did report that I was very lucky, as it can take some patients over a year for the nerve to heal. I never needed physical therapy, instead I did the arm exercises my doctor prescribed.

It took roughly six months for all the tenderness at the incision and in my tricep to go away. Around that same time, I found that my grip strength was almost normal and I could tolerate lifting more than 10lbs. Now at one year post-op, I am at 100%

I have both Cubital and Carpal on the right, and if it continues to get worse, I will have surgery next year after the baby is born. I plan on going to the same surgeon because of the brilliant job he did on putting me back together, but more importantly, I want my scars to match! :P

Here is what my arm looked like one day post-op:

I certainly hope that if you are reading this you won’t have to undergo this type of ulnar surgery, but if you do, please have faith.

This active mom of many came through it for the better!

From WOHM to WAHM!

Posted by Mom at 2:36pm in Work At Home

I did it. Mom is finally home. I officially changed my title to WAHM!

Since I have neglected my blog for so long and am still in “update” mode, let me tell you how I came home.

First, I must put in the following disclaimer:

*Mom still works for the MAN, and even though she is working at HOME, she is not “HOME FREE”!*

Alrighty. Back in February 2006, Mom was still a WOHM, working a few hours outside the home every day after the crazy “April ‘05 layoff-then-hire-me-back-on-part-time-fiasco”.

Then the company hired Mrs. New IT Director! There was a rumor that the company I provided IT services for was going to close my location and then I would be permanently out of my part-time gig.

Mrs. New IT Director arranged a meeting, and I drove a few hours out of town to see her. Turns out, she is wonderful; we have very similar IT experience and really hit it off.  She had already layed the groundwork for me to WAH before we even met!

I closed the company at the end of March and moved the network to the corporate office. April 3, 2006 was my first official day working at home! Like any other job, it has its good and bad sides.

Here are the good things:
- I AM HOME!
- I make more money now then when I worked full time out of the home!
- My commute time is ZERO…especially nice when gas is $3+ a gallon
- I can wear whatever I want
- My schedule is somewhat flexible

The bad:
- I work full time
- Some days I get calls at 7:30am and as late as 7:00pm
- I am still working for “Corporate America” and not myself

The good far outweighs the bad right now. Being able to eat breakfast with the kids and not rush off everyday is amazing. The money factor is also a huge win for us. I made very decent money for being part-time (more than entry-level IT positions make FT) so being able to WAH plus the pay increase just feels unbelievable to me. And to think that I *was* going to be permanently layed off at the end of March.

I am still so very thankful and humbled by all this.

My goal is still to eventually “come home” and be a SAHM or WAHM doing my own thing. I will continue to plan, penny pinch, and explore business opportunities.

In the meantime, we are celebrating me being one step closer.

Mom’s Been Gone a Long Time

Posted by Mom at 3:37pm in Announcements, Family

What does one do when they’ve neglected their blog for a very long time? I feel the need to delete everything and start over. However, even though my posts are few, it would be a shame to erase some of my thoughts from the last two years.

I will leave it all and do my best to continue where I left off.

Ah…December was a crazy month for our family. My mother was stricken with a mystery illness which left her unable to move and full of pain. She was hospitalized on and off until a wonderful Rheumatologist diagnosed her condition: Polymyalgia Rheumatica. She is taking oral prednisone for the next two years and is doing great.

We found out I was pregnant again on Christmas Eve! After 18 long months of trying and teetering on a diagnosis of “unexplained secondary infertility” my doctor decided to order an HSG (Hysterosalpingogram) to rule out any problems after my D&C in June 2004. Everything was clear. We got pregnant the same cycle. Due Date = September 6, 2006

The New Year came and went and let’s fast forward to March. March 9th we heard the baby’s heartbeat via doppler. March 11th I was not feeling well and had some gas type cramping. After that unpleasantness passed, we tried to listen to the baby. We couldn’t find her heartbeat.

On March 13th my doctor confirmed via ultrasound that our precious little girl had died sometime around Sat. the 11th.

We were 15 weeks pregnant. We have been grieving the loss of our sweet Sarah.

We decided to undergo testing for RPL (Recurrent Pregnancy Loss) and finally found that I have developed an autoimmune disorder that can cause blood clots to form in the baby’s placenta, hence cutting off the oxygen supply to the baby.

We went on vacation to Florida and found out I was pregnant again. I am taking Lovenox injections and baby aspirin that will hopefully prevent another tragic loss. I am due at the end of February and so far all is well.

There is SO much to update on the work front. I will do that shortly in a separate post.

Ah…Mom is back to blogging! :)
